It is no secret that finances are tough for a lot of people up and down the country right now. Fortunately, this doesn’t mean that people have to struggle to eat healthy foods. We have all heard the argument that healthy food costs more than junk food, but this simply isn’t the case when you know where to look. In fact, there are hundreds of different types of delicious recipes that will fill you up and leave you satisfied for hardly any price at all. With a little bit of planning and a touch of culinary adventure, here are some recipes that don’t cost the earth but will do you the world of good.

Vegetarian Chilli and Rice

Rice is easily available from almost all types of food shops. Even better, it doesn’t cost a lot and can feed a lot of people – especially when bought in bulk. Vegetarian chilli can be made out of very simple ingredients. Tins of chopped tomatoes, kidney beans, and a few fresh vegetables such as carrots and onions can be beautifully mixed together to create a delicious dish. Add a pinch of chilli powder to flavour to a temperature that your mouth will feel comfortable with, and tuck into some wholesome and hearty food.

Eggy Bread

If you are in the mood for a snack but don’t want to bother making a whole meal, then eggy bread may well provide the answer. Whisk up an egg, smother it over some bread and then fry it up in a pan. There is no need to put a lot of oil in the pan because the egg is covering the bread, although you could add a little bit of pepper to taste if you so wish. Eggy bread is a cheap and healthy lifestyle way of filling up a space when you are in a rush.

Pasta Bake

Beloved of teenagers up and down the land, a pasta bake can be as simple and nutritious as you want it to be. Bulk bags of pasta don’t cost a lot and will last for weeks and months in many households. Chop up some vegetables, throw in some tinned tomatoes and sprinkle a bit of cheese on top of the boiled pasta. Whack it all together in a tray in the oven and sit back to wait for this wonderfully filling meal to cook properly. Hungry kids can eat their fill without even realising that mum or dad has hidden some extra vegetables inside the bake!

Shepherd’s Pie

For a tasty meat dish, buy some mince and a bag of potatoes. Fry up the mince and drain the fat out of the pan once it has cooked, and mash up some boiled potatoes. Cover the mince with the mashed potatoes in the pan, and allow it to cook in the oven. Some people like to add ketchup or gravy to such a meal. The fact that it has been cooked from scratched means there aren’t artificial chemicals to worry about.
