  • Removing the old shingles

Though many homeowners reshingle their roof by installing the new shingles over the old ones, but it is recommended to remove the old shingles. And you should definitely remove the old shingles if they are damaged. So, first step is to remove the shingles which you can do with pitchfork or shingle scraper.

  • Cleaning the roof

Because the shingles are fixed with nails, many of the nails and shingle bits can be still holding the roof. You need to remove these completely. Take a claw hammer and pry out the remaining nails from the roof. Once done with removing the nails, you need to clean the roof by brushing off all the shingle parts and other debris.

  • Covering the holes

After cleaning the roof completely, you need to inspect if there is any hole in the board. You can ignore the small holes, but if there is any big hole you need to cover it. Use aluminum flashing for covering the holes.

  • Installing the roof felt

Once you have covered all the holes in your roof, you can go on with installing the felt.While installing the felt, you should start at the roof bottom moving upwards towards the top.Secure the felt with staple gun. Staples should be placed 6-8 inches apart on the felt.

  • Installing the drip edge

Now, install the drip edge by placing it horizontally against the roof edge. Make sure that the curved out edge is fitted over the roof overhang. Once you are done with installing the drip edge over the entire roof, fix it to the felt with the help of nails.

  • Installing the new shingles

Now, install the new shingles over the drip edge. While placing each shingle make sure that it pokes out 1/4to 3/8” over the drip edge. Also, the nails should be used at the top part of the shingles. While installing the shingle rows, you should keep in mind that each row should overlap the lower row by ¼ inch.

  • Securing the ridge cap

Now, install the ridge caps over the roof ridges and secure them with the help of nails.

Finally, you are done with reshingling your roof. Now, you can dispose of the leftover and old damaged shinglesin garbage.
