The primary benefit of silicone hosing is versatility. These hoses are suitable for use with both coolants and high temperature products, and therefore can be used in many diverse situations.

High temperatures

Silicone hoses carry fluids of up to 260 degrees C (500 degrees F), which is significantly higher than similar products. Other products could deform or soften at such high temperatures, so silicone hosing is the clear choice for temperatures this high.

The shape of silicon hosing can also be an advantage, as it comes in both straight and formed lengths, perfect for a multitude of engine types. It is even possible to get coloured hosing, making connections clearer in a complex engine or device.

Stability

Situations with high levels of vibration can be a challenge for similar products made from other materials but silicone is ideal. Silicone is able to dampen vibrations, keeping noise to a minimum and remaining stable despite the risk of friction. In addition, silicone hoses, such as tend to have far superior flexibility to alternatives, and this remains consistent across their lifespan. This flexibility helps absorb stress and movement (for example, from wind), which helps to reduce any risk of the hoses splitting, hardening, rotting or even exploding.

The stability of silicone hosing is another of its advantages. Environmental factors, such as snow, heat, rain, drought and UV have very little effect, if any, on hoses made from silicone. Engines or vehicles intended for harsh environments would certainly benefit from the use of silicone hosing, as discussed by the American Chemistry Council. In addition, silicone itself is unlikely to react with other substances being used alongside it. It is a very inert material, which makes it a safe and reliable choice in situations where it will be alongside or in direct contact with multiple other items with different chemical composition.

Silicone hosing can be more expensive than alternatives made of different materials, but any apparent saving could be deceiving. Silicone has a very long lifespan and will often outlive the engine or other device they are part of. This can make it a cost effective choice, as they may not need replacing at all. In addition, their reliability and stability reduce the risk of any failure, which may impact on other components causing further problems in the engine, which is definitely a positive!
