Choosing The Right Paint For Your Car

Shopping for car paint can be a challenge – but not if you know the difference between the four main types of paint. Here is your guide to choosing the right one for your car.

Solid Colour

Solid car paint is the most common – not just in the UK, but all over the world. it gives a consistent, uniform colour across the whole vehicle, with no variations in shade or finish. It is then enhanced with a gloss coat, which not only gives additional protection to the paintwork but accentuates the colour that you have chosen. When it comes to painting a car yourself, solid pain colours are easily touched up – and larger areas of coverage or a complete re-spray of the car can be carried out with an aerosol.

Metallic

Metallic car paint has a distinctive look that is the result of tiny aluminium particles within the paint. These reflect more light than solid colour paint, adding shimmer or sparkle to the shine that results from the topcoat of lacquer. This not only has a beautiful, eye-catching effect – but it is a finish that is incredibly forgiving when it comes to minor imperfections like small dents and scuffs. It can also mask how dirty a car is – although regular washing will show off the gorgeous metallic finish.

Pearlescent

Pearlescent car paint is similar to metallic paint in a number of ways – but there is one key difference. Pearlescent car paint contains mica, which is made of silicate minerals. While the aluminium particles in metallic car paint reflect light, the mica in pearlescent paint refracts it. This results in the light that hits your car is split into all the colours of the rainbow, producing that typical pearlescent sheen. Much like its metallic counterpart, pearlescent paint can hide a number of perfections and a build-up of everyday dirt.

Matte

Matte car paint is something of a controversial choice amongst car owners. Despite it being a love it or hate it kind of paint, it is becoming more and more widely seen. Matte paint is known for its non-reflective look and rough texture. While this is guaranteed to turn heads, it can also prevent a number of challenges when it comes to caring for your car. Any imperfections are extremely visible, and dirt tends to cling to the rougher surface. As a result, we recommend having a matte paint job carried out professionally.
