Whenever we rent a car in Dubai, we all are in a bit of hurry to get in the car and drive off to some adventure. It is worth taking a couple of minutes and check all the function of the car which you might need in your journey.

Here is a checklist of what to check before driving off on the road from car rental booth.

Damages and Scratches

Get a good look at the car. Check for scratches, dings or tears. Note them down if possible, because the car rental agent would be too.

Take Photos

Take photos of the bumps, damages and number plate.

Check cleanliness and smell.

Sit in the car and see cleanliness. Check for any foul smell.

Start the car and check for sounds.

Start the car. Check the engine sound and make sure its running fairly well with no strange noises.

Check Air Conditioning

You almost daily need air conditioning in Dubai in car. Make sure AC is working properly.

Adjust your seats

Adjust seats and make sure your feet touch the pedal properly.

Fix your Mirrors.

After fixing seat, fix your mirrors. Side and rear view mirror setting in start can help you avoid heavy heartbeats when you get on road.

Check Window Controls.

Check all window controls to save embarrassment at toll / ticket windows.

Check Turn Signals.

Find the turn signals and make sure all are working properly.  

Find the windshield wipers.

Locate windshield wipers in case it starts pouring down. Spray the windshield to ensure that the washer system works and the wipers are in good shape.

Locate the lights.

Find the on-off switch for multiple lights. Check if all the lights are working, including parking lights, low/high beams, indicators, reverse lights, brake lights & rear number plate light.

Make sure the oil light isn’t on.

Check for any oil change or engine lights and immediately notify if some light doesn’t seem right.

Find the fuel latch.

Locate the fuel latch and how to open it. Also the direction of the fuel latch for refueling at pump.

Locks

Make sure all doors are working under the lock system. Check all doors and trunk.

Check the emergency brake.

Release the emergency brake.

Check tire pressure.

Check the tires for inflation, good tread, and even tread wear. It may help you to notice suspension, alignment, or tire maintenance problem.

Spare Tire & Jack

Open the trunk and look for the spare tire and check that it’s properly inflated. Verify that there’s a jack, mini toolbox and lug wrench for changing the tire as well.

Fluid Levels

Open the hood and check the fluid levels with a paper towel. At least check engine oil. If you are suspicious, check brake fluid, water, transmission fluid, and power steering fluid.

Battery

Have a quick look at the battery for corrosion.

Test Drive

When you’re satisfied, take the car for a quick spin around the lot. Check turning, braking, and listen for any odd sound.
